Tayamen completes basic training
Army Reserve Pvt. Tyler N. Tayamen has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.
During the nine weeks, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills.
Tayamen is the son of Connie Tayamen of Mountain View. He is a 2011 graduate of Waiakea High School.
VFW hosts chicken dinner Friday
A fundraising chicken dinner will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on Makala Boulevard. Johnny Shot will provide entertainment. Dinner is $10 and there is a $5 cover charge for the band.

March 13: Jean and Robert Cole placed first north/south. Susan Brown and Patricia Bauman placed second. East/west first place winners were Carol Richards and Susan Lee; second, J.Willard Williams and John (Jack) Buchanan.
March 14: Coming in first north/south were Audrey Mitchell and Shaon Bolton; second, Lynn Puri and Jean Cole. East/west first place winners were J. Willard Williams and John (Jack) Buchanan. Taking second were Marilynn Bass and Chuck Clark.

Farmers union hosts potluck
Hawaii Farmers Union United Kona Chapter will sponsor a “Locavore Potluck” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Buddha’s Cup Coffee Farm, 78-1377 Bishop Road in Holualoa.
Bob Shaffer of Soil Culture Consulting will speak on the importance of compost in a healthy agriculture system, and Steve Bess of West Hawaii Mediation Center will discuss the new agriculture mediation program.
Attendees should bring a dish to share.
