Jets sign Vick and release Sanchez

Jets sign Vick and release Sanchez

The New York Jets have signed quarterback Michael Vick and released Mark Sanchez.

The Sanchez move comes as no surprise. He competed for the starting quarterback job with rookie Geno Smith last season in training camp, but the competition was cut short when Sanchez injured his right shoulder in a preseason game.

He missed all of last season recovering from surgery.

Vick was a free agent after playing for the Eagles for the last five seasons.

The Jets traded up in the 2009 draft to pick Sanchez No. 5 overall out of Southern California. He became a starter as a rookie and led the Jets to the AFC championship game in his first two seasons.

Sanchez threw for 12,092 yards and 68 touchdowns, with 69 interceptions, in 62 career games.

Raiders acquire QB Schaub from Texans

ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Oakland Raiders have acquired quarterback Matt Schaub from the Houston Texans for an undisclosed draft pick.

The teams completed the trade on Friday after Schaub passed a physical.

The Raiders are counting on Schaub to bounce back from a disappointing 2013 season in Houston and replace Terrelle Pryor and Matt McGloin as the starter in Oakland.

Schaub was Houston’s starter from 2007 until last season, when he was benched in favor of Case Keenum after a terrible start to the year. The 32-year-old is a two-time Pro Bowler, who last made the game in 2012.

Dodgers’ Beckett, Kemp on DL vs. D’backs

SYDNEY — The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed pitcher Josh Beckett and outfielder Matt Kemp on the 15-day disabled list in paring their active roster to 25 players for the season opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Australia.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks opened the Major League Baseball season late Friday night at Sydney Cricket Ground.

Chad Billingsley, still recovering from right elbow surgery, also was put on the DL. Beckett has a bruised thumb and Kemp is rehabbing from ankle surgery.

Left fielder Carl Crawford also was inactive. He is on paternity leave.

The moves Friday are retroactive to March 19, so all three players are ineligible to return until April 3. That means they’ll miss at least a three-game series in San Diego from March 30 to April 2.

Arizona optioned pitchers Charles Brewer and Zeke Spruill to the minors.
