The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for Hawaii Island until 7:30 a.m. Friday.
At 4:24 a.m., radar showed moderate to heavy rain over the windward side of the island, from Waipio Valley to Hilo and Kapoho, according to the service. Additional heavy showers were expected to move ashore this morning.
Other locations included in the advisory are: Pepeekeo, Paauilo, Ookala, Laupahoehoe, Waimea, Honomu, Honokaa and Hakalau, according to the service.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding, according to the service. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, poor braking action and reduced visibility.
