The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended a flood advisory for Hawaii Island until 10:15 a.m. Friday.
At 7:16 a.m., radar showed an area of heavy rain approximately nine miles southeast of Hawi in North Kohala, according to forecasters, who also noted Upolu Airport in the advisory. The area of heavy rain was moving west at 5 mph. It extends approximately 30 miles offshore to the east of the island.
Forecasters said the advisory may be extended beyond 10:15 a.m. Friday.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous conditions because of ponding, poor braking action and reduced visibility, according to the service.
