A flood advisory has been issued for Hawaii Island until 11:45 p.m. Saturday.
At 8:36 p.m. Saturday, radar showed heavy rain about 8 miles west of Waipio Valley along the Hamakua Coast, according to the National Weather Service. The area of heavy rain was nearly stationary.
Forecasters also noted the following areas in the advisory: Upolu Airport, Hawi and Mahukona in North Kohala and Honokaa and Hamakua.
The public is advised to stay away from drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot.
The advisory may extended beyond 11:45 p.m. if the heavy rain persists, according to forecasters.
