A 39-year-old Kona man is facing an assault charge after he reportedly boarded a dive tour boat in waters off the Kona Coast and assaulted the boat’s captain earlier this week.

Shortly after noon Tuesday, Hawaii Police Department officers learned that a man had reportedly boarded the boat in waters off Kohanaiki Beach Park while a dive tour was in progress. He reportedly then argued with the captain and punched him before jumping off of the boat.

Subsequent investigation led to the identity of the suspect, 39-year-old Cheyenne James Gaspar, of Kailua-Kona, according to police. Gaspar turned himself into police at the Kona police station on Thursday.

He was arrested and charged with third-degree assault. He was released after posting $1,000 bail.
