A flood advisory has been extended for Hawaii Island until 11:15 p.m. Friday.
At 8 p.m., radar continued to show moderate to show an area of persistent moderate to heavy rain between Paauilo and Honokaa along the Hamakua Coast, according to National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu. The area of heavy rain, which was nearly stationary, also extends inland to the Saddle Road area near Waimea.
Forecasters noted that the area of heavy rain is expected to remain mainly over rural areas. However, it could affect areas long Highway 19, forecasters cautioned.
The advisory may be extended beyond 11:15 p.m. if the heavy rain persists.
The public is advised to stay away from drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
