Cordage, fiber plants workshops planned

Gary Eoff will teach a series of three workshops on Hawaiian cordage plants and fiber preparation at Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook. To attend the third class, one of the two previous classes must be attended. Class cost is $65 each class. Call 323-3318 to register.

Introduction to Hawaiian Cordage/Fiber Plants and Cordage Making will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. March 25. The 10 basic Hawaiian cordage plants will be discussed, and examples of cordage and the plants will be presented. Students will process and make cordage using hau fiber.

From 1 to 4 p.m. April 15, students can take Preparation and Cordage Making with Hawaiian Fiber Plants. This class is a hands-on workshop in preparing and making cordage with hala, ukiuki, ieie, ahuawa, wauke and morning glory. Students will pound and scrape fibers and improve cordage-making skills.

From 1 to 4 p.m. May 13, the final class is Preparation and Cordage Making Using Coconut and Olona. The class includes discussion and display items with coconut and olona two- and three-ply cordage; three-, four- and five-ply braiding and how they are used will be explored.

Aloha Quilters meets Saturday

The monthly meeting of Aloha Quilters of Kona begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Wallace Hall at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua.

Aloha Quilters of Kona is composed of quilters working in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. The group meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share old and new ideas and techniques and to promote the art of quilting in the community. Everyone is welcome.

Park offering workshops, activities

Free workshops and activities are held daily at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park. Activities include learning how to play the ukulele from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays and noon to 3 p.m. Thursdays; learning the basic concept of hula from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday; geology walks with a park volunteer beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and cultural demonstrations from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays.

Workshops from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hale Hookipa (visitor center) include: basic lauhala bracelet weaving on March 30, bamboo stamp carving on April 20 and gourd piece decorating on May 25. Space and matierals are limited. For more information, call 326-9057.

Lions schedules pancake breakfast

The Kailua-Kona Lions Club will hold its annual pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday at Hale Halawai on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona. All-you-can-eat pancakes will be served with sausage, fruit, coffee, tea and water. Tickets are $8.

All proceeds are returned back to the community for humanitarian efforts including restoring sight, providing disaster relief, supporting youth and addressing other needs such as health and disability. Call Alex Mitchell for tickets at 917-496-7256.
