A South Kohala factory is on the auction block, as a U.S. Bankruptcy judge wraps up proceedings in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy case.
Big Island Carbon completed the Kawaihae factory in 2009, with intentions of turning macadamia nut shells into granulated, activated carbon for filtration devices and ultracapacitors to provide power boosts for windmills and hybrid cars. As of the time of their filing for bankruptcy protection, the company owed about $16 million to secured creditors and another $550,000 to other creditors.
California-based Tiger Remarketing Service was awarded the contract to sell the factory.
