Free youth admission to Vulcans games

The University of Hawaii at Hilo athletic department is offering free admission to youth organizations for home baseball and softball games.

Children 12 and younger wearing team or organization uniforms may enter home games for free. Organizations include youth sports teams, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Tickets are available at the Vulcans ticket office and the ticket table at home games.

UH-Hilo soccer camps

Three soccer camps are scheduled this month at UH-Hilo.

  • Spring break camp, March 17 to 21: 9 a.m. to noon, 7- to 10-year-olds, $60; 1 to 4 p.m., 11- to 14-year-olds, $60; 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., 4- to 6-year-olds, $20
  • Women’s camp, March 23: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., UH-Hilo soccer field, ages 15 and older, $50
  • Men’s camp, March 22: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., UH-Hilo soccer field, ages 15 years and older, $50

High school rodeo at Paniolo Park

The Hawaii High School Rodeo at Paniolo Park in Waimea continues the first weekend of April and May. Saturday activities feature keiki and junior divisions; Sunday activities feature high school participants. The state finals junior division is May 9 to 11 and high school division is June 12 to 15.

The competition is free; donations are welcome. Food will be sold, with proceeds to benefit the program.

Kai Opua Canoe Club start dates

The Kai Opua Canoe Club is set to start its season.

  • Girls (12-18): 4 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, starting March 10
  • Boys (12-18): 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting March 11
  • Novice “Y,” co-ed, and under-12: 3:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting March 25
  • Women: Novice A and B (new paddlers), 4:30 p.m. Mondays, starting March 10; open and age divisions, 5:30 p.m. Mondays, starting March 31; team meeting, 5:30 p.m., March 28, at the Kai Opua Canoe Halau
  • Men: Novice B (new paddlers), 4:30 p.m., Tuesdays, starting March 25; Novice A, open and age divisions, 5:15 p.m. Tuesdays, starting April 1

Practices are at Kamakahonu Beach near King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. New paddlers must have copies of identifications; paddlers younger than 18 need their parent or guardian’s signature.

Keauhou Canoe Club start dates

The Keauhou Canoe Club is set to start its season.

Orientation for youth paddlers is 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 16. Lunch will be provided.

  • Boys/girls (12 and older): 3:30 to 5 p.m., Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, starting March 17

Canoe race at Kawaihae Surf Park

The Kohala Coast/Beanie Heen Memorial races will be at 9 a.m. March 29 at Kawaihae Surf Park. The races, for OC-1, OC-2 and SUP on short and long courses, start and end at the park. There will be a party and raffle after the races.

Kona Stampede Rodeo

The Kona Roping Club will participate in the 50th annual Kona Stampede Rodeo on March 15 and 16 at Honaunau Rodeo Arena. The action, including events such as poo wai u and double mugging, begins at 8 a.m.; the rodeo starts at noon.

Admission is $7; free for children younger than 11. There will be food concessions.

Gold Coast Little League softball

Gold Coast Little League is accepting registration for girls ages 7 to 16 from Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa, Waimea, Kohala, Honokaa, Paauilo and Laupahoehoe. Sign-ups are held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Friday at Waimea Park. The season fee is $65 per player.

Hawaii Junior Golf Day

The Hawaii State Junior Golf Association is offering free introductory clinics for junior golfers on March 22 at Makalei Golf Club. Registration is at 8:30 a.m.; clinics are planned from 9 to 11 a.m. Register at hsjga.org.

Kamehameha Schools golf benefit

West Hawaii Ohana, the nonprofit parent association of Kamehameha Schools, will hold its 15th annual Golf Outing on March 29 at Big Island Country Club. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m.; shotgun start at 8:30.

The event is open to everyone. The entry fee is $100 per player. Proceeds benefit the scholarship fund for the Kapalama Campus West Hawaii boarders. Lunch and an awards presentation follow the two-person scramble format play.

Basketball junior high league

The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold an instructional basketball league for students in grades six to eight. The season starts in April. Games will be played Thursdays and Saturdays. Registration forms are available at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.

Kona Hongwanji Judo Club tournament

Kona horseshoe club spring league

The Kona Horseshoe Pitchers Club Spring League will start March 13. Membership is required for NHPA-sanctioned doubles play. Singles will be matched up when possible. The eight-week league costs $5 per week and is played from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursdays at the Palm Court horseshoe pits at Old Kona Airport Park.

Everyone is welcome to casual play, 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays.

Big Island Running Company offers training

The Big Island Running Co. is offering guided speed workouts concluding Saturday.

The training cycle will coincide with group runs at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each runner will be supplied with a training program of four scheduled runs.

Hawaii Cycling Club Century Ride

The Hawaii Cycling Club will host the Century Ride on April 5 to benefit North Hawaii Hospice.

The ride starts and ends at Spencer Beach Park. Distances are 31 miles (starting at 8 a.m.), 62 miles (7:30) and 112 miles (6:30). There will be aid stations every 15 to 25 miles.

Entry fees are $50 through March 23 and $60 thereafter. Participants will receive a T-shirt, food on the course and a barbecue after the rides.

Cycling club offers Lavaman training

The Hawaii Cycling Club will host free training time trials at 8 a.m. March 15 for participants training for Lavaman Waikoloa. Registration is set from 7 to 7:40 a.m. at Bike Works Beach & Sport in the Queens’ Shops.

The Kua Bay time trial starts on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, just south of Waikoloa Beach Road. The course is 12.2 miles.

Hawaii Racing Association survey

The Hawaii Racing Association is updating its membership list for 2014 to find out what types of motor sports Big Island residents are interested in having at a proposed Kona Motorsport Park.

The HRA’s website shows potential uses for a 250-acre park and offers an online survey.
