A wind advisory has been issued for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits until 2 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The service forecast west winds around 40 mph to 55 mph with localized gusts topping 80 mph for areas above 8,000 feet in elevation.
The Mauna Kea Weather Center reports that the Mauna Kea access road is open at the Visitor Information Station this morning. The current temperature at the summit was 34.4 degrees as of 6:45 a.m. Friday.
A wind advisory means that strong winds are expected. Motorists are advised to use caution while driving in the affected area. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
