Violet Kaiawe
Violet Tok Soonie Kaiawe, 95, of Hawi died Feb. 20, 2014, at Kohala Hospital. Born April 14, 1918, in Honolulu, she was a homemaker, 4-H club leader and member of the university extension and Kuikahi Baptist Church. She was a newspaper correspondent for the former Hilo Tribune Herald and she wrote a weekly column, “Kaiawe Commentary.” She also wrote an autobiography and worked at Project Learn in Kohala, American Cancer Society and March of Dimes.
Friends may call at 9 a.m. March 1 at Landmark Baptist Church at 54-3668 Akoni Pule Highway in Honomakau for an 11:30 a.m. service. Burial will be at the Hawi county cemetery. Lunch follows at Jodo Mission Hall in Hawi. Family requests casual attire be worn. Flowers are welcome.
She is survived by daughters, Alberta (William) Bekgaard of California, Carol (Dennis) Gonsalves and Ruth (Richard) Perreira both of Hilo, Juliet (Robert) White of Hawi; brothers, Benjamin Chang of California, Joseph (Betty) Chang of Halaula; sisters, Florence Brown of Honolulu, Betty Trawick and Leina (Ernest) Begley, both of North Dakota; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Sarah ann Iwalani Kahee, 49, of Hilo died Feb. 17, 2014, at home. Born in Hilo, she was an employee at Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.

Ellen Keiko Kubo, 75, of Hilo died Feb. 1, 2014, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born July 17, 1938, in Papaikou, she was a retired clerk for the state Department of Transportation and a retired secretary for the former U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service.
Friends may call at 4 p.m. March 4 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 5 p.m. service. A committal service will be held at noon March 5 at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Family requests casual attire be worn. Lei and flowers are welcome.

Kamahao Kahanu ola Judalena, 4 months, of Pahala died Feb. 14, 2014, at Ka‘u Hospital. He was born on Oct. 7, 2013, in Honolulu.

Agnes “Aggie” Namuo Kelii, 96, of Waikoloa died Feb. 22, 2014, at North Hawaii Community Hospital. Born April 22, 1917, in Kailua-Kona, she was a room maid at the former Kona Inn Hotel, a maid and cook for the Wall family and member of ILWU and Lanakila Congregational Church.

Frances Provance, 91, of Ocean View died Feb. 22, 2014. Born May 5, 1922, in Ambridge, Pa., she was a volunteer and former waitress.

James Arthur Taren, 89, of Waimea died Feb. 21, 2014. Born Nov. 10, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, he served in the U.S. military and later worked as a neurosurgeon.

Narako Kunimoto, 95, of Papaikou died Feb. 11, 2014, at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born Jan. 11, 1919, in Onomea, she was a retired maintenance worker from I. Kitagawa &Co. Ltd. in Hilo and member of the Papaikou Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Kalaoa Kumiai and Papaikou Senior Citizens Club.
Private services were held. Family requests no flowers or monetary gifts.

Leon Andrew Muresan, 62, of Hilo died Feb. 16, 2014, at his residence. Born in Bolton, England, he was a retired water treatment operator for the state of California.
