A 20-year-old man was rescued Thursday afternoon after apparently becoming lost while hiking in the Piha Forest Reserve in North Hilo.

Using GPS coordinates from the hiker’s cellphone, Hawaii County Fire Department rescue personnel, who responded to the 11:25 a.m. report, were able to locate him using Chopper 1 upon its arrival, according to the department. Rescue crews on the ground then located the man and guided him for about a mile out of the reserve.

The man reported being in good health and did not require medical attention, according to the department. All fire department units returned to quarters by 4:31 p.m.
