Cancer support group meets Tuesday

Cancer support group meets Tuesday

A cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Teshima’s Restaurant in Honalo. People newly diagnosed with cancer and cancer survivors are welcome, as well as interested caregivers and supportive family members.

The group meets to share cancer-related issues and to lend support to one another. Women are encouraged to learn about breast cancer risks and early detection to help make informed decisions with their doctors about breast health.

Maximizing fruit production discussed

Kona Young Farmers will host a free presentation by Ken Love titled “East Asian Fruits &Mangos in Japan” from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Cooperative Extension Service Office in Kainaliu.

Love is the executive director of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers and president of American Culinary Federation, Kona-Kohala Chefs Association. He will discuss how mango and other fruit trees are grown in Japan to minimize their size while maximizing their production. Love will show how a 15-by-15-foot tree that is only 4 feet tall can produce 1,000 mangos. Avocados, starfruit, loquat and citrus production will also be discussed. Light refreshments will be served.

Simple composting program offered

Friends of the Libraries, Kona is sponsoring a program on composting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Kailua-Kona Library.

Melissa Chivers will present simple composting and cover the who, what, where, when and why of composting. She will also present the simple methods used by students at Honaunau Elementary School.

Mental illness support meeting held Tuesday

The National Alliance of the Mentally Ill will hold a regular support meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Paradise Clubhouse, located at 77-6435 Kuakini Highway, near the Sunquest sign on the mauka side.

Book club meets Wednesday

The Hawaii Preparatory Academy Community Book Club meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Dyer Memorial Library on the upper campus. The meetings are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served and participants are invited to bring a snack to share.

The current book selection is “The Burgess Boys” by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Elizabeth Strout.

The next meeting will be April 17. The book selection for this discussion will be “The World’s Strongest Librarian” by Josh Hanagarne.
