The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Big Island summits until 6 p.m. today.

This advisory means that periods of snow or sleet will cause travel difficulties. Motorists should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility while using caution while driving.

The weather service anticipates up to 3 inches of snow and sleet, 15 to 25 mph west winds with more than 35 mph localized gusts, and hazardous driving conditions through this evening in the affected areas.

The road to Mauna Kea is now closed at the visitor information station because of snow on the summit.
