Famed pianist playing at Waimea theater

Kahilu Theatre in Waimea is presenting Vadym Kholodenko — the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition winner — at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The most prestigious classical piano competition in the world is the Van Cliburn Competition, held once every four years in June. Thirty pianists from all over the world competed for the Gold Medal in 2014 and Kholodenko, 26, from the Ukraine, beat out a fantastic field.

On Wednesday, Kholodenko will present a romantically dreamy program of Chopin, Bach, Schubert and Mendelsohn, finishing off with some rousing Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov. The concert is sponsored by Alan Gartenhaus, Rhoady Lee, and Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Vadym will perform in more than 50 engagements in 2013–14 as part of his debut season as Cliburn Gold Medalist, including the Mann Center with The Philadelphia Orchestra, La Jolla Music Society, CU Presents, Cliburn Concerts, the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, the Lied Center of Kansas, and Portland Piano International. He also performs Feb. 20 at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, before continuing to the eastern states, Italy and Moscow.

The recording label Harmonia Mundi released a live CD of his award-winning Van Cliburn Competition performances, which will be available for sale at Kahilu Theatre. Tickets, priced $20, $34, $44 and $64, are available from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday at the Kahilu Theatre box office. Ticket may also be purchase by calling 885-6868 or visiting kahilutheatre.org.
