Man charged in connection to convenience store robbery
A 33-year-old man has been charged with four offenses stemming from the robbery of a Hilo convenience store over the weekend, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
Around 3 a.m. Saturday, two men entered a convenience store at the corner of Kinoole and Hoku streets. One of them purchased several items and then threatened to shoot the clerk if he didn’t let him take a package of cigarettes without paying. When another customer entered the store, the two men left, police said.
Police investigation led to the identity of the suspect as 33-year-old Jamal K.K. Hauoli-Ontai, who has no permanent address. He was located at 5:40 p.m. Saturday at the Mooheau bus terminal in Hilo.
As an officer attempted to arrest him, Hauoli-Ontai became combative, causing minor injuries to the officer. Hauoli-Ontai was arrested and taken to the Hilo police cellblock while Area I Criminal Investigations Section detectives continued the investigation. At 3:30 p.m. Monday, he was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault of a police officer, resisting arrest and promoting a detrimental drug.
His bail was set at $63,000. He remained at the cellblock until his initial court appearance Tuesday, police said.
S. Kona man dies after structure collapses on him
A man was killed Tuesday afternoon when a structure collapsed on him in South Kona.
Fire rescue personnel responding to the 2:48 p.m. call extricated an “elderly” man from a storage shack that had apparently collapsed on the front of a property off Bruno Road in Captain Cook, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.
The man was transported to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No further information was available as of press time Tuesday.
Trial date for man suspected of firing at officers
HONOLULU — Bail has been set at $1 million for a man indicted Jan. 29 on four counts of attempting to murder police officers.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported an April trial date was set Monday for 32-year-old Nicolas Nakano.
Nakano in December was on parole for auto and identity theft convictions. The parole board Dec. 5 issued a warrant for his arrest for drug possession and other violations.
Police say Nakano on Jan. 23, while driving, tried to evade a police officer. They say he rammed another car and flipped his own. Nakano fled on foot.
Police say officers confronted Nakano near Waialae Country Club and that Nakano fired a shot from a handgun at an officer’s head. Police say he tried to fire twice more but the gun misfired.
State official wants fines for damage to palace
HONOLULU — The chairman of the state Land Board said the people who damaged the front door of the Iolani Palace in Honolulu should be fined.
William Aila told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that a strong message needs to be sent that the palace must be respected.
Surveillance cameras Saturday showed a woman kicking and smashing glass panes of a palace door.
The woman and a man were arrested but not charged.
They appeared Monday in Honolulu District Court and pleaded guilty to unrelated misdemeanors connected to citations for violating park closure rules and illegal placement of tents in parks.
They were credited for time served and set free.
Honolulu Police spokeswoman Michelle Yu said the city continues to investigate the palace property damage case.
Navy adds 4th submarine to Guam-based fleet
HAGATNA, Guam — Guam’s delegate to Congress said the Navy will soon base a fourth submarine in the U.S. territory.
Del. Madeleine Bordallo said in a statement Tuesday increasing the number of submarines will add to the Navy’s capabilities when responding to contingencies in the region.
The USS Topeka is a Los Angeles-class fast attack submarine. It joins the USS Chicago, the USS Key West and the USS Oklahoma City already based in Guam.
Bordallo said the Navy’s decision is another clear example of Guam’s strategic location in the Asia-Pacific region.
The USS Topeka has a crew of 173, including 13 officers and 157 enlisted sailors.
