The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for the Big Island summits through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a wind advisory for the Big Island summits through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The service forecast south winds of 35 mph to 45 mph with gusts topping 60 mph for elevations above 8,000 feet. Winds are expected to diminish tonight.

A high wind advisory means that winds of at least 45 mph and gusts over 5 mph are forecast, according to the service. Winds this strong can bring down tree branches. Motorists are advised to use extra caution or to postpone travel until the winds subside.
