Hawaii Island police arrested 29 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Jan. 13 and Sunday; seven were involved in traffic accidents.

Hawaii Island police arrested 29 drivers for suspected drunken driving between Jan. 13 and Sunday; seven were involved in traffic accidents.

Police have made 82 suspected DUI arrests this year compared with 57 during the same period in 2013, according to the Hawaii County Police Department.

Kona officers arrested 15 motorists while South Hilo officers arrested nine, according to police. Puna officers arrested three motorists and South Kohala officers arrested two.

There have been 66 major accidents this year compared with 69 during the same period in 2013. To date, there have been three traffic fatalities on Big Island public roadways compared with two at this time in 2013. To date, none of the fatalities has been related to drugs, alcohol or a combination of alcohol and drugs, according to police.
