Chronic disease prevention and maintenance discussed

Paul Strauss, Department of Health public health educator, will discuss prevention and management of chronic diseases from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Meeting Hale, Building G at the West Hawaii Civic Center.

This Kona Hospital Foundation bimonthly informal lecture presentation series is free to attend.

Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases are the leading causes of death in Hawaii. Struass’ lecture will focus on the importance of physical activity and proper nutrition, and how they relate to the prevention and management of chronic diseases.

Mental illness support offered

The National Alliance of the Mentally Ill holds a support group meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kona Paradise Clubhouse, 77-6435 Kuakini Highway. The group helps family and friends cope with the issues involved with mental illness.

Kona Toastmasters meets Tuesday

Kona Toastmasters meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month on the second floor of the old Borders building on the corner of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Henry Street. The group helps attendees learn to think on their feet, speak confidently and listen effectively.
