Indians to compete under Olympic flag in Sochi
LAUSANNE, Switzerland — India athletes will compete under the Olympic flag — not their national flag — at next month’s Winter Games in Sochi.
The IOC says the decision comes after the Indian Olympic Association failed to schedule its general assembly before the start of the games on Feb. 7.
With the Indian body still suspended, the IOC “is considering all necessary arrangements for the Indian athletes who have qualified for the Sochi Games to take part as Independent Olympic Participants under the Olympic flag.”
The International Olympic Committee said last month it would lift the suspension once new elections are held. The Indians have scheduled the meeting for Feb. 9, two days after the opening of the Olympics.
The Indian association was suspended by the IOC in December 2012 for electing tainted officials.
Roma coach says Bradley is joining Toronto FC
ROME — Roma coach Rudi Garcia has confirmed United States midfielder Michael Bradley is on the verge of joining Toronto FC.
After an Italian Cup win over Sampdoria on Thursday, Garcia said, “Bradley wanted to go, we couldn’t keep the player. He did very well with me in these months but I understand he wants to play more.”
Italian media reported Roma has accepted an offer of 7 million euros ($9.5 million) for Bradley from the Major League Soccer club.
The 26-year-old Bradley is in his second season with Roma after joining from Chievo Verona in 2012, but he has started just five of 19 league matches this season.
Bradley started his career with MetroStars before moving to Europe, where he also had spells with Heerenveen, Borussia Moenchengladbach and Aston Villa.
