A wind advisory for the Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea summits remains in effect until 5 p.m. today, according to National Weather Service forecasters in Honolulu.
The service forecast south winds of 35 mph to 60 mph with gusts topping 65 mph for elevations above 8,000 feet. Forecasters said strong winds in the middle atmosphere associated with a passing cold front are producing the strong winds at the summits.
The Mauna Kea Weather Center reported at 4:35 a.m. that the Mauna Kea Access Road was closed at the Visitor Information Station because of icy road conditions at the summit. The current temperature is 23 degrees.
A high wind advisory means that winds of at least 30 mph and gusts over 50 mph are forecast, according to the service. Winds this strong can bring down tree branches. Motorists are advised to use extra caution or to postpone travel until the winds subside.
