A small craft advisory is in effect for all Hawaii Island waters until 6 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The service forecast north winds of 25 knots, or about 29 mph. Rough seas of 10 feet to 12 feet are also expected. Forecasters said a moderate north swell will combine with a northwest swell resulting in the rough seas. The forecasters cautioned that northerly winds around the Big Island and Maui will likely accelerate bringing more hazardous conditions.
The service also issued a marine weather statement for the island’s windward waters, warning that the large north swell will likely impact north-facing harbors this weekend. It cautioned of large breaking waves at Hilo Harbor, which can make entering and exiting the harbor dangerous.
A small craft advisory means that wind speeds of 25 to 33 knots, or 29 to 38 mph, and/or seas are expected to be 10 feet or greater and expected to produce conditions hazardous to small craft, according to the service.
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in such conditions.
