The Muliwai trail and Waimanu Valley campground in North Kohala are closed because of heavy rains and flooding, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife and Hawaii County Civil Defense were working this morning to determine if there were any stranded hikers in Waimanu Valley.
Hikers should not to try to cross flooded streams because of the danger of being swept away. Instead, they should wait on high ground until the stream has subsided, DLNR said.
DLNR will reopen the trail once its staff have inspected and made any needed repairs.
