The potential for locally heavy showers and thunderstorms will persist on the Big Island for the remainder of the day, according to forecasters. Forecasters cautioned that heavy rains during the past couple of days have resulted in very saturated grounds and additional heavy rainfall may produce flash flooding.
While the entire island is under the flash flood watch, the service cautioned the windward areas are at the greatest risk.
A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding, according to the service, which also noted that it does not have to be raining heavily where you are for flash flooding to occur. Heavy rain on nearby slopes may produce flooding in area streams, canyons and other low-lying areas.
