A flood advisory has been issued for Hawaii Island effective until 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
At 5:20 p.m., radar showed moderate to heavy rain over the east and southeast slopes of the Big Island, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. The heaviest rainfall was over the South Hilo and Puna areas where rain was falling at 1 to 1.5 inches per hour.
Radar also showed moderate rain over Ka‘u slopes, according to the service, which noted the area should expect additional rainfall during the next hour.
The public is advised to stay away from streams, draining and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding and not to try to cross fast-flowing or rising water. Rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions because of ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.
