Not necessarily lethargy, but there definitely wasn’t enough energy.

Not necessarily lethargy, but there definitely wasn’t enough energy.

That was one of coach David Kaneshiro’s major takeaways Friday after the University of Hawaii women’s basketball team lost to Saint Martin’s 59-45 at its gym.

Chelsea Haskey scored 18 points and Brooke Paulson added 15 for the Saints (6-3), who held the Vulcans (2-4) without a scorer in double figures.

“Our attitude wasn’t poor, but we were just waiting for something good to happen,” Kaneshiro said. “Saint Martin’s did a lot of attacking.”

Perhaps as a result, UH-Hilo shot just 25.8 percent.

The teams match up again at 5 p.m. today.

“We need to be more aggressive and have the energy to get stops and be more assertive,” Kaneshiro said.

McKenzie Mangino scored eight points, and Whitney Edens, Kamie Imai and Kirstie Williams each added seven for the Vulcans, who were outrebounded 47-41.

Saint Martin’s never trailed and led by as many as 20 before UH-Hilo cut into the deficit in the second half. Edens and Williams fueled an 8-0 run with 3-pointers.

“We didn’t play our best, but they had a lot to do with that,” Kaneshiro said. “They played tougher than we did, quicker to the ball. They did a good job of pushing our post players.”

Imai finished with 11 rebounds. The Vulcans were 4 of 16 from 3-point range.
