Honokaa 68, Waiakea 44: At the beginning of the preseason, Honokaa coach Daphne Honma told her girls basketball team she expected the Dragons to be able to compete against Division I foes. On opening night of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation regular season, Honokaa did that and more.

Chancis Fernandez scored 18 points and Shemika Frazier produced 15 on Tuesday night as the Dragons overpowered Waiakea 68-44 at Honokaa Armory.

Aliyah Fernandez added 11 points for the Dragons, who reached the finals of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II tournament last season. “They played well and did a lot of positive things,” said Honma, who is in first season back at the helm of the Dragons. “I think we still have a long ways to go. We played well enough to win. Waiakea was tough.”

Shaila Apele and Nicole Antonio both scored 11 points for the Warriors, who never recovered after Honokaa opened up a double-digit lead in the first quarter.

In junior varsity, Honokaa won 60-38.
