Blue Sea Artisans Gallery will display in December works by watercolor painter and digital designer Stefanie Culbertson, who is known for her Anuenue series of watercolor paintings.
A featured artist’s reception will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 7 at the gallery in Kona International Market. For information, call 329-8000. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Culbertson grew up in Germany and started her formal art education when she was 15. She holds associate’s degrees in liberal arts and drama and a bachelor’s degree in digital design. She does graphic and digital design work and watercolor painting through her business, Tiffany Arts Designs.
Culbertson aims to inspire and touch the viewers’ soul on a deeper level, captivating their imagination with her imagery of Hawaii, illuminated in vivid layers of rainbow colors and reflective light. Her latest work is inspired by the power and beauty of waves, showing a surfer taking on a gigantic swell “Surfing Jaws – Anuenue Nalu.” The “Cycle of Life &the 4 Elements” is her symbolic painting of the regeneration of life. The four elements: fire, earth, air and water are interwoven in the figure eight. The phoenix rises out of the fire touching the sun, while the enormous wave crashes, triggered by the molten fire moving deep beneath the earth. The air is the fuel for the fire and the force sustaining life, forming the waves.
