6 arrested in English football match-fixing probe
LONDON — British police investigating soccer match-fixing have arrested six men in a probe of a suspected international betting syndicate.
The arrests, announced Wednesday, follow an investigation by the Daily Telegraph newspaper, which reported that at least three of the men held this week are soccer players.
It appears the affected games were at levels no higher than the Football Conference — the fifth tier of the sport in England.
Premier League matches are not reported to be under investigation, and the Football League, which runs the three professional divisions below the Premier League, said it had not been contacted by police.
The Telegraph made a covertly recorded video in which it alleges a fixer said lower league matches in England could be fixed for $81,380.
UFC’s Del Rosario critical after heart attack
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — UFC fighter Shane del Rosario has suffered a heart attack and is in critical condition at a Southern California hospital.
Manager Jason House released a statement Wednesday saying Del Rosario had a catastrophic cardiovascular collapse at his home in Newport on Tuesday morning and was taken to the local Hoag Hospital in full cardiac arrest.
House says Del Rosario was resuscitated in the emergency room and his heart rate and blood pressure was stabilized, but his condition remained critical Wednesday afternoon.
Del Rosario, a 30-year-old heavyweight, has lost his first two fights since coming to UFC from Strikeforce, and pulled out of a scheduled Dec. 28 match with Guto Inocente because of a rib injury.
Aaron Hernandez takes Fifth in Florida lawsuit
MIAMI — Lawyers for Aaron Hernandez say their client won’t answer accusations in a federal lawsuit filed by a man who says the former star NFL tight end shot him in the face outside a Miami strip club.
In the response filed Wednesday to the complaint by 30-year-old Alexander Bradley, attorneys say the former University of Florida player is invoking his Fifth Amendment right that protects people from incriminating themselves.
According to court records, Bradley claims Hernandez shot him after they argued at the club in February. Bradley seeks at least $100,000 in damages.
A judge in Miami denied Hernandez’s request to delay the Florida proceedings until a murder charge against him in the shooting death in Massachusetts of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd is resolved.
The New England Patriots released Hernandez soon after he was accused in the killing.
