Winners of the eighth annual Moku O Keawe International Hula Festival were announced Nov. 9 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village in Waikoloa Beach Resort.
Awards were presented for makua solo (women age 36 to 54), wahine solo (age 13 to 45) and wahine group divisions. Wahine groups performed the ancient hula kahiko Nov. 7 and modern hula auwana Nov. 9 and scores were combined to determine overall winners. Kupuna group and solo winners (age 46 or older) were announced Nov. 8.
The top-scoring wahine group, with 1,177 points, was Halau Pukamaikala, kumu hula Yukiko Toyama from Japan. In second place was Waimea’s Beamer Solomon Halau O Poohala, kumu hula Hulali Solomon Covington, who placed in every category of the festival.
Altogether, 19 halau from Hawaii and Japan competed in the three-day event, which also featured Hawaiian cultural workshops and a made-in-Hawaii marketplace. For more information, visit mokif.com.

12 to be inducted into Paniolo Hall of Fame
Twelve cowboys will be inducted into the Paniolo Hall of Fame during the the Hawaii Cattlemen’s Council Annual Convention at noon Saturday at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
The members of the Paniolo Hall of Fame are among the generations of Hawaiian cowboys who have stood out in their contributions to cattle ranching throughout all the islands.
The 2013 Paniolo Hall of Fame inductees are: Johnny Correia Jr., 1927-1994, Kukaiau and Jack Ramos 77 ranches, Hawaii; James S. “Jimmy” Greenwell, Palani Ranch, Hawaii; Robert L. “Bobby” Hind Jr., 1921-1988, Puuwaawaa and McCandless ranches, Hawaii; William F. Aloha Quilters of Kona will hold its monthly meeting at 9:30 a.m. today in Wallace Hall at Christ Church Episcopal in Kealakekua.
The quilters work in both traditional and Hawaiian styles. The group meets informally on the third Saturday of each month to share techniques and promote the art of quilting. New members and novice quilters are welcome.

Youth Christmas
craft class offered
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation is holding a Christmas craft class for youths 8 to 14 years old from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 3 and 17 at Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona. Participants will make a Christmas decoration, cards and more.
