More than 400 people attended “Hawaii Nei 2013’s” art exhibit and awards ceremony on opening night, Nov. 1. “Hawaii Nei” continues through Nov. 29 at Wailoa Art and Cultural Center in Hilo.

Adult finalists were:

c Jurors’ Choice, “The Vanishing Palila” by Dennis Leatherman;

c Two-Dimensional Work, professional first place, “Place of Refuge” by Margaret Barnaby; and amateur first place, “keaka o ka keiki by Carol Noel;

c Three-Dimensional Work, professional first place, “Pueo: Owls from ridge to reef” by John Mydock;

c Photography, professional first place,“Apapane Sunset” by Joseph Ruesin; and amateur first place, “Twofold Ascension” by Arthur Wierzchos;

c Contemporary, first place, “Loulu” by Lanaya Deily;

c Focus category, Ka leo hone o ka palila: The sweet voices of the Palila: professional, first place, “Palila confection” by Kathleen Kam; amateur, 1st place, “Modern Family” by Marilee Krinitt;

c Focus category, dry forest plants, Hoohanohano na keiki o Kekaha: Honoring the children of the Kaha lands, professional, 1st place, “Na pua o Kaupulehu II” by Kathleen Kam;

Youth finalists were:

c Jurors’ Choice, “Dance of Birds” by Group Incense a S.E.E.D. Program’

c High School, first place, “Dragon Bones” by Arah Ko;

c Middle School, first place, “Refresh” by Madison Pratt;

c Upper Elementary, first place, “Okai” by Aliyah Hookano;

c Lower Elementary, first place, “Deep Creep” by Elijah Rogers;

c Elementary Group, “Iiwi Totem” by Connections Public Charter School, second grade class;

c Ka leo hone o ka palila: The sweet voices of the palila, first place, “Palila in the Jet Stream” by Dakota Hill; group, first place, “Palilas Love Mamane” by Waiakea Waena school.

“Exploring Palila and Their Forest Home,” a gallery tour with Jackson Bauer, is slated from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Biologist and bird photographer Jack Jeffrey leads a gallery tour from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. the same day.

The Wailoa Art and Cultural Center is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and from noon to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
