A small craft advisory for waters off Hawaii Island remains in effect through Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu. Strong harbor surges are also expected at Hilo and Kahului harbors.
Forecasters said the advisory was prompted by a large north swell producing rough seas. The service forecast northeast winds reaching 10 knots to 20 knots, or about 11 mph to 23 mph. Rough seas of 12 feet to 17 feet are also expected.
Moderate to heavy harbor surges are expected to impact Hilo and Kahului harbors, according to forecasters, who cautioned boaters to be prepared for hazard conditions when entering or leaving port.
A small craft advisory means that wind speeds of 25 to 33 knots, or 29 to 38 mph, and/or seas are expected to be 10 feet or greater and expected to produce conditions hazardous to small craft, according to the service. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in such conditions.
