Parker School hosts admissions open house
Parker School is hosting an admissions open house from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Parents and students can tour the campus, meet current Parker students, teachers and staff, and learn about the school’s academic and extracurricular programs.
Parker will also hold a kindergarten and first-grade admissions preview from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Nov. 20. Parents of future kindergartners and first-graders can see the program and teachers in action, explore the classrooms and talk with teachers. The preview is a parents-only event and the school asks that interested parents RSVP to the number or email address below.
Applications for admission for the 2014-2015 academic year will be accepted through Jan. 31. Financial aid and scholarships are available.

Kealakehe High offers
college information night
Kealakehe High School will host a free college planning night 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the school’s cafeteria. The event is sponsored by Hawaii USA Federal Credit Union and the Hawaii Association for College Admissions Counseling. Topics for the evening include: Getting ready for college and addressing why students should go; choosing a college; the application process; letters of recommendation; financing college and obtaining scholarships and internet resources.

KTA announces photography contest winners
KTA Super Stores and Kraft Foods have announced the winners of this year’s Kokua i Na Kula Nature Photography contest. Grand-prize winners include Holualoa Elementary School second-grader Joshua Johnson; Konawaena Middle School seventh-grader Skylar Brown; and Christian Liberty Academy 11th-grader Sierra Ferro. Winners will receive a field trip for his or her class provided by Hawaii Forest and Trails, a $600 check to their school to cover the costs of transportation, their winning photo specially framed and 500 extra Kokua i Na Kula points for their school.
Big Island students grades K-12 were asked to take a picture of nature that showcased their island. More than 60 photographs were submitted. Judges based their selections on originality, creativity, overall impression, and appropriateness to the theme.
Now in its 20th year, Kokua i Na Kula provides Big Island schools with the opportunity to earn a share of $100,000 for school beautification projects, classroom enhancements, equipment and extra-curricular activities.
HPA holds spelling bee
Forty-one fifth- through eighth-grade students participated in the Hawaii Preparatory Academy spelling bee Nov. 6. Seventh-grader Kealia Haitsuka and classmate Hayden Virtue were co-winners in this year’s bee, with Haitsuka correctly spelling “armistice,” and Virtue correctly spelling “tomahawk.” Haitsuka and Virtue now advance to the Hawaii Island District Spelling Bee on Jan. 18 at HPA’s Gates Performing Arts Center. The winner of the district competition represents the Big Island at the state spelling bee.
Ironman finisher visits Kealakehe Elementary
Ironman World Championship finisher Jon Jokiel recently visited second-grade students in Toni Reynolds’ class at Kealakehe Elementary School. Jokiel, a ranger with the Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park was on furlough through Ironman week and used his free time to visit students and share his training experiences leading up to the race. After completing the race Oct. 12, Jokiel returned to the school to answer questions students had prepared for him. Students shared cards and messages of congratulations and asked him about the grueling competition.
“Their notes and posters of support were terrific! It really helped get me through to the finish line,” said Jokiel, who completed his first Ironman World Championship in 12:23:50.
