Meet and Eat sets Thanksgiving dinner
The Kona Task Force on Feeding the Hungry will host the 21st annual Meet and Eat Thanksgiving dinner from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Nov. 27 at the Kealakehe Intermediate School cafeteria on Onipaa Street. The meal is free, and open to the public but bags of rice will be accepted for the Food Basket.
The task force is made up of community organizations, churches and businesses joining together to feed the needy in West Hawaii. Under the leadership of coordinator Ardie Ikeda, Meet and Eat expects to serve 400 dinners this year and will be dedicated to the many volunteers who have made this program successful for the past 20 years. Boaters must
complete safety course
Hawaii boaters have a year to complete an approved boating safety course.
The new rule requiring the course was signed into law Oct. 30, 2012, with a two-year grace period. Enforcement will begin Nov. 10.
“Our primary goal in pursuing and formalizing the mandatory education rule was safety,” Department of Land and Natural Resources Chairman William Aila, said. “The use of the ocean continues to diversify. People are venturing far from shore to enjoy our waters. All boaters should be well versed in the state current boating laws to prevent accidents and loss of life.”
The courses will include Hawaii-specific information, Aila said.
“It is our hope that boaters will not perceive mandatory education as a burden but rather as a way to ensure safety for our ohana and enhance their enjoyment of our waters,” he added
The Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement will enforce the rules, DLNR officials said. Any person violating this rule shall be fined not less than $50 and not more than $1,000 or sentenced to a term of imprisonment of not more than 30 days, or both, for each violation; the court may also prevent an individual from operating a vessel in state waters for up to 30 days.

The public may also contact DOBOR offices on each island.
The division has worked with boating safety partners to provide online and classroom courses, is nearing completion on a home study course and plans to issue its own proof of compliance cards. People who have previously taken National Association of Boating Law Administrators boating courses may be able to take an abbreviated course on state-specific information to comply with the new rule.
Thanksgiving craft class is today, Nov. 19
Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a Thanksgiving craft class for ages 8 to 14 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today and Nov. 19 at Kekuaokalani Gym in Kailua-Kona. Participants will make napkin holders, Thanksgiving cards and more. Registration is ongoing at the Parks and Recreation office at the gym.

Wellness Through Movement event set
Catherine Rosasco-Mitchell will present a Wellness Through Movement event from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday during Kohala Library’s Parent Hour.
The session will offer tools to deal with a child who doesn’t always listen and a sneak preview of how the full program will help a child listen better. The full, free Wellness Through Movement after-school series begins Jan. 22.
Wellness Through Movement teaches the whole child through movement games: sensory motor learning with a child’s development in mental, physical, and emotionally wellbeing. The program offers many movement games for children kindergarten through fifth grade.

French speakers meeting Thursday
