The public is invited to attend the Waimea Community Association town meeting at 5:15 p.m. today in the Waimea Middle School cafeteria.
Queens Health Systems, corporate parent of The Queen’s Medical Center, recently entered into an agreement with North Hawaii Community Hospital to explore the possibility of a formal affiliation. Queen’s recognizes the importance of reaching out to local communities to build positive relationships, be a good community partner, and invest in a healthy Hawaii. To accomplish this, Art Ushijima, Queen’s CEO, will be conducting a community talk story as part of the town meeting. The public’s views are important to Queen’s and will help determine how best they can serve the growing health needs of North Hawaii and Hawaii Island, as well as be a partner for healthy communities statewide.
Attendees are urged to support Waimea’s Food Pantry with cash or checks, with KTA Sav-a-Tapes and Foodland Maikai Rewards, or with nonperishable foods and extra produce including citrus, greens and avocados. Anyone with these extra food items who is unable to attend the meeting is urged to deliver their donation to the Annunciation Church office during business hours.

Chamber plans new resource program
The Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce Membership Services Committee has announced a new, quarterly educational resource program — Brown Bag Briefing. Offered once a quarter, this informational noontime program invites members and nonmembers for an hour program dedicated to providing information on a topic relevant to West Hawaii businesses. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch and drink.
The first Brown Bag Briefing will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at the West Hawaii Civic Center Community Hale, Building G. The topic of discussion is “Trends and Changes in Technology.” Rick Casey will discuss the latest trends in software and hardware technology, and how these new developments may benefit or frustrate a small business owner or employee.
The program is free to chamber members. Nonmembers are welcome at a cost of $15. Registration is encouraged and can be made at kona-kohala.com. For more information, contact the chamber office at 329-1758.
Libraries observe Veterans Day
In observance of Veterans Day, all public libraries will be closed from Saturday through Monday.

Mailani performs Saturday in Keauhou
Kona Stories is hosting a free concert featuring Mailani from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday in the bookstore.
Multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Award-winner Mailani shares a little bit of her family holiday spirit with the world by way of her new CD, “My Island Christmas.” The CD features four original songs, as well as holiday classics.
Makaeo cleanup
slated Saturday
The monthly community cleanup at the Makaeo Jogging Path at the Old Kona Airport sponsored by Friends for Fitness will be from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers should meet at the entrance by the water fountain. Garden tools, light refreshments and snacks will be provided.
A plant sale will also be held from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the entrance to the walking path. Proceeds will go to Friends for Fitness and will be used to beautify the park.
Mauna Kea Quilters meeting Saturday
Mauna Kea Quilters, a group of patchwork quilters who enjoy sharing our love of quilting with others, meets from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday in the meeting room of the Thelma Parker Memorial Library. Everyone is invited to attend.
Each year, members donate many quilts to help raise money for worthwhile organizations such as Malaai (The Culinary Garden of Waimea Middle School) and Relay for Life. The group also provides quilts to the police and fire departments and North Hawaii Community Hospital for those in need. At Christmas, members make quilted stockings and quilts for needy children.
