YWCA seeking LeaderLuncheon nominees

The YWCA is accepting nominations for its 2014 LeaderLuncheon honorees.

The YWCA of Oahu has honored women leaders at the event for 36 years. The annual luncheon is an opportunity to honor them by sharing their stories and celebrating their accomplishments.

The nomination form is available at ywcaoahu.org and can be submitted via email to LeaderLuncheon@ywcaoahu.org.

Waimea flea market

The First Saturday Flea Market takes place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the New Hope Waimea Gym. The market is a fundraiser for the gymnasium improvement fund. Parking is behind the gym or along Church Row Park.

Spencer House blessing Sunday

Friends of Waimea’s Historic Spencer House and Waimea Preservation Association are inviting the community to a traditional Hawaiian blessing at 3 p.m. Sunday to begin a new chapter in the history of this significant building.

The 160-year-old Spencer House — located next to McDonalds in Waimea Center — has been the focus of a grassroots community effort “to bring to life this magnificent icon of Waimea days gone by,” said project lead Paul Johnston.

“Thanks to the generosity of our island ohana, we have raised over $50,000 in pledges and the lease has been signed and plans are underway to chart a new course for use by the community of this 20-plus room home,” he said.

The program Sunday will begin with a brief welcome and traditional oki piko with maile lei blessing by Danny Kaniela Akaka. Then, everyone may peek inside to see how much has been accomplished. An ukulele jam and ice cream social concludes the gathering.

“Also, we still welcome help. We are most in need of furnishings, lighting fixtures and holiday decorations. Please contact us if you have something to contribute,” said Johnston. For more information, contact Johnston at 938-4540 or email pej1000@aol.com.
