Oliver Amend

Oliver “Ollie” J. Amend, 85, of Hilo died Oct. 23, 2013, at home. Born Aug. 25, 1928, in Seward, Alaska, he was a milkman, worked construction and was on the Seward Volunteer Fire Department, Ambulance Corporation and City Council.

Friends may call 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 2 at New Hope Christian Fellowship in Hilo for an 11 a.m. service and celebration of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Cecelia Amend of Hilo; daughter, Nancy Amend of Alaska; son, Oliver Amend Jr. of Alaska; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

George Kahananui

George “Kino” Kinoulu Kahananui, 88, of Kalaoa died Oct. 9, 2013, at his residence. His last name was misspelled in an earlier published obituary because of information supplied by the mortuary.

Kikuye Kohashi

Kikuye Shiraki Kohashi, 84, of Hilo died Oct. 20, 2013, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Kona, she was a retired Extension home economist and 4-H agent with the University of Hawaii at Manoa, former home economics teacher and member of Church of the Holy Apostles, Waiakeawaena Kumiai, Zonta Club of Hilo and national extension associations.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Nov. 2 at Church of the Holy Apostles, 1407 Kapiolani St., Hilo, for an 11 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

She is survived by husband, Wataru Kohashi of Hilo; daughters, Lois Kohashi-Sinclair of Seattle, Julia Zee of Hilo; sons, Andrew Kohashi of Honolulu, Owen Kohashi of Seattle; brother, Iwao Shiraki of Honolulu; sisters, Nobuko Toyama and Kimiyo Marutani, both of Honolulu; six grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Bartholomew Mwarey

Bartholomew Allen Mwarey, 30, of Takotna, Alaska, died Oct. 22, 2013, in Alaska. Born May 18, 1983, in Hilo, he was a self-employed handyman.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Nov. 2 at Pahoa Sacred Heart Catholic Church for an 11 a.m. service. Burial follows in the church cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

Wan Huang

Wan Tian Huang, 99, of Hilo died Oct. 17, 2013, at Life Care Center of Hilo. He was born June 12, 1914, in China.

Friends may call 9:30 a.m. to noon Nov. 3 at Dodo Mortuary chapel. Burial follows at Homelani Memorial Park, Ilima Section.

He is survived by daughters, Shun Fun Wong Woo of Honolulu, Shun Nuen Wong Leung of Hilo; son, Shun Kwan Wong of Hilo; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren.

Bellerina Kaheaku

Bellerina Kaheaku, 45, of Pahoa died Oct. 10, 2013, at Hilo Medical Center. She was born in Honolulu.

Friends may call at 3 p.m. Nov. 3 at Weinberg Hall at Keehi Memorial Park, 2685 N. Nimitz Highway, Honolulu, for a 4 p.m. service. Scattering of her ashes takes place earlier that day in a private ceremony. Contact a family member for more information.

Norma Marion Kekuluiki (Auwae) Kema, 71, of Hilo died Oct. 21, 2013, at home. Born on July 26, 1942, in Keaukaha, she was a homemaker and member of Malia Puka O Kalani Catholic Church in Keaukaha.

Irene Minor

Irene D. Minor, 94, of Hilo, died Oct. 12, 2013, at Pohai Malama Hospice of Hilo. Born in Lowell, Mass., she was one of the first “Winnie the Welders” and “Rosie the Riveters” at the Fore River Shipyard in Boston, a sergeant in the Woman’s Army Corps in Europe during World War II and member of the American Legion Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hilo Elks Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, Hawaii Humane Society and past president of the Hilo Woman’s Club.

Friends may call at 10 a.m. Nov. 5 at Church of The Holy Apostles for a 10:30 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers. Donations may be made to Hospice of Hilo, Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Hawaii Humane Society.

She is survived by sons, Edward Minor Jr. of New York, David Minor of Hilo; daughter, Andrea Minor of Nevada; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kazuo Fukui

Kazuo “Ken” Fukui, 77, of Hilo died Oct. 25, 2013, at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. Born March 13, 1936, in Waipunalei, he was a retired truck driver and laborer for the Department of Transportation State Highways Division, crane operator for the former Hilo Coast Processing Co. and member of Malia Puka O Kalani Catholic Church in Keaukaha.

Friends may call 9 a.m. Nov. 6 at Malia Puka O Kalani Catholic Church, Keaukaha for a 10 a.m. Mass. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Doris Fukui of Hilo; sons, Wade Fukui and Ryan Fukui, both of Hilo; daughter, Desiree Kaleohano of Hilo; brothers, Isamu Fukui of Papaaloa, Likio Fukui of California, Tom Fukui and Richard Fukui, both of Hilo, Donald Fukui of Honolulu; sisters, Alice Ono of Hilo, Mitsue Nakagawa of Honokaa, Harume Higashigawa of California, Nancy Delos Santos of Honolulu; two granddaughters; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

William Haena

William “Pikinini” John Haena, 70, of Kapaau died Oct. 14, 2013, at Hilo Medical Center. Born on July 8, 1943, in Hilo, he was a Hawaii County lifeguard, private swim coach and American Red Cross member.

He is survived by daughters, Stephanie (David) Petras of New Orleans, Maryelese (Benjamin) Haena-Valencia of Glendora, Calif., Julianne (Eleazar) Chavez of Los Angeles; sister, Rosemary (Samuel) Dwight of Carson, Calif.; brother, Napoleon Haena of Paradise Park; seven grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Nellie Lum Ho

Nellie F. Lum Ho, 86, of Hilo died Oct. 8, 2013, at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center. She was born in 1927 in Honokaa.

Private services were held. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Hawaii Heart Association.

She is survived by son, Bobby (Barbara McCullen) Lum Ho of Maryland; daughters Nadine (Greg) Duras of Washington, Cindy (Nelson) Ahia of Hilo; brother, Walter (Marge) Akita of Oregon; sisters, Marjorie Martz and Elsie Myers, both of California, Sharlene Akita of Honolulu; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Raymond Dedman

Raymond “Fish” Wilbur Dedman, 64, of Pahala died Oct. 14, 2013, at Ka‘u Hospital. Born Feb. 7, 1949, in Honolulu, he was a fisherman and former high school football coach.

Henry Kamekona Jr.

Henry “Kona” Kamekona Jr., 76, of Pahoa died Oct. 20, 2013, at home. Born on Oahu, he was a heavy equipment mechanic and a retired Army National Guardsman.

He is survived by wife, Elvira Kamekona of Pahoa; sons, Henry Kamekona III of Honolulu, Armando Kamekona of California, daughter, Dora Wheatley of Pahoa; brother, Larry Joseph of Hauula, Oahu; sisters, Gwendolyn Lono and Maxine (Bert) Awa, both of Kaneohe, Oahu; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; numerous nieces and nephews.

Kimiyo Kondo

Kimiyo Kondo, 96, of Kealakekua died Aug. 26, 2013, at her caregiver’s residence. Born Oct. 15, 1916, in Captain Cook, she was a homemaker and member of Kona Hongwanji Mission.

She is survived by daughters, Ellen Kondo and Elaine Rabacal, both of Honolulu; a granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary Kaysinger

Gary Lew Kaysinger, 64, of Kapaau died Oct. 17, 2013, at his home. Born Feb. 16, 1949, in Watsonville, Calif., he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants, an educator, football coach, adolescent counselor, co-owner of an ocean sport company on Maui and was active in philanthropic work around the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii.

A private celebration of life will be held.

He is survived by wife, Sue Kaysinger of Kapaau; daughters, Kathleen Kaysinger of Portland, Ore., Megan DePaolo of Seattle; mother, Genevieve Kaysinger of Kapaau; brother, Gerald (Sharon) Kaysinger of Porterville, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.

Valerie Jean Green, 64, of Kailua-Kona died Oct. 13, 2013. Born April 18, 1949, in California, she worked as a nurse at the University of Calfornia at San Francisco Medical Center and Mt. Zion Hospital.
