Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunken driving from Oct. 21 through Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

Big Island police arrested 20 motorists for drunken driving from Oct. 21 through Sunday. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 1,069 DUI arrests compared with 1,200 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.9 percent.

There have been 1,105 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,213 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.9 percent.

So far this year, there have been 23 traffic fatalities on Hawaii Island compared with 35 during the same period last year, a decrease of 34.3 percent.

To date, 13 fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol or a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
