ReefTalk to focus on South Kohala reefs

Scientists will discuss South Kohala’s reefs during ReefTalk from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Hokuloa United Church of Christ in Puako. Cindy Grace-McCaskey and Leila Sievanen will present findings from a survey of people who work and play on the South Kohala Coast. They gathered opinions from 200 coastal users about coral reef conditions, threats to the reef, and what should be done about those threats. Grace-McCaskey and Sievanen are anthropologists at the Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center in Honolulu.

SafeTALK training slated for Friday

A three-hour suicide prevention training safeTALK will be presented from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at the West Hawaii Civic Center conference room. It is sponsored by the Kona Suicide Prevention Task Force. The training is offered free of charge to anyone 15 years or older who is interested in helping a person at risk of suicide.

New charter high school proposed

A talk story session about a proposed new charter high school for the Kona area will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Queen Emma Community Center at Christ Church Episcopal, 81-1004 Konawaena School Road.

All interested individuals area welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Waimea club offers dance lessons

The Waimea Ballroom Dance Club announces six weeks of intermediate nightclub two-step lessons on Monday evenings from Nov. 4 through Dec. 9 at the Waimea Elementary School cafeteria. No partner is necessary.

The set of lessons cost $10, plus $10 half annual dues for new members. Registration is at 6:30 p.m. the first two weeks only.
