West Hawaii travelers will have another flying option come next summer.
Hawaiian Airlines announced Thursday that it will begin its first-ever nonstop service between Kona International Airport and Los Angeles in response to growing demand during summer’s peak travel time. The flights, to be scheduled Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, will be offered from June 26 to Sept. 19.
The airline also plans four-times-weekly flights between Lihue, Kauai, and Los Angeles.
The new service will add more than 22,000 seats to both island travel markets over 12 weeks of service, and it complements the new Oakland service that will also start next summer with direct flights to Lihue and Kona for 10 weeks.
“We are offering more options for Southern California travelers to book their vacation and experience Hawaii’s Big Island and Garden Isle,” Peter Ingram, Hawaiian Airlines executive vice president and chief commercial officer, said in a statement.
The new Los Angeles service will be operated by Hawaiian Airlines’ wide-body, twin-aisle Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. With the addition of the service, both Lihue and Kona International airports will have a Hawaiian Airlines wide-body aircraft arriving every day of the week next summer.
