VFW, auxiliary offer Thursday barbecue

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and its ladies auxiliary host a weekly barbecue from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Thursdays at the post located at 74-5562 Makala Blvd. in Kailua-Kona. Hamburgers or hot dogs and a variety of sides are offered for $5.

KMS fundraiser Sunday at Denny’s

Kona Music Society will host dinner at Denny’s Restaurant from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday. KMS will provide servers, hosts and entertainment. Denny’s will donate a portion of the gross receipts and all tips for the evening to KMS. This fundraiser is offered in partnership with Rotary Club of Kona, as part of its Project Compassion.

Proceeds will be applied toward expenses for the society’s holiday 2013 and spring 2014 concerts, including its free holiday concert at the Makaeo Events pavilion at the Old Kona Airport Park on Dec. 22. Visit konamusicsociety.org for a concert schedule and more information.

Kona Sailing Club plans Oktoberfest

The Kona Sailing Club holds its fifth annual Oktoberfest Oct. 26 at the Keauhou Kona Yacht Club. Social begins at 5 p.m. with a bratwurst barbecue and trimmings; a movie and drawing to benefit Kona Junior Sailors will begin at sunset. This year’s film, “Capt. Ron,” and is a wacky sailing adventure of a family on a rickety boat with Capt. Ron, portrayed by Kurt Russell, in command.

Anderson speaking at Kailua-Kona library

Karen Anderson, author of “The Hawaii Home Book, Practical Tips for Tropical Living” and managing editor of “At Home, Living in Style in West Hawaii” published by West Hawaii Today, will present a discussion of the latest trends in homebuilding, remodeling, interior design and other topics related to the Hawaii home from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library.

Codependents women’s group meets Monday

Co-Dependents Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship of men and women whose common purpose is recovery from codependence and the development and maintenance of healthy relationships. The women’s meeting is from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Unity Church sanctuary, 75-5722 Hanama Place, Kailua-Kona, across from Big Island Grill.
