Alternating single lane closures are planned this week in both directions on Mamalahoa Highway, between mile marker 10 in Hookena and mile marker 109 in Kealakekua, for roadway pavement reconstruction, according to the Hawaii Department of Transportation.
Alternating single lane closures are also planned in both directions on Mamalahoa Highway, between Uluoa Street and Old Kona Village Road, for sign installations, according to the department.
Crews will be working from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday. All work is weather permitting.
Shutdown cancels Kauai wildlife refuge week events
KILAUEA, Kauai — The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is canceling all events scheduled in celebration of National Wildlife Refuge Week because of the federal government shutdown.
The refuge said Friday it won’t be offering a guided hike with a seabird biologist and a talk at Kilauea Point.
Officials are unable to hold the events because the shutdown halted all preparation and planning by staff and volunteers.
All wildlife refuges within the Kauai National Wildlife Refuge Complex will remain closed until funding is restored.
The Kauai complex includes wildlife refuges at Kilauea Point, Hanalei and Huleia.
Manoa scholar recognized for
work on Confucius
HONOLULU — China is awarding a University of Hawaii at Manoa scholar of Chinese philosophy the 2013 Confucius Culture Prize.
Roger Ames recently received the award at the sixth annual World Confucian Conference in Shandong, China.
The prize is sponsored by China’s Ministry of Culture and the provincial government in Shandong, home of the ancient philosopher Confucius.
They established the award in 2009 to honor institutions and individuals who have tremendously contributed to Confucian studies around the world.
The university said Friday Ames has been a Manoa faculty member since 1978. He received a 2012 Regent’s Medal for Excellence in Research and other awards.
Bicyclist struck, wounded by
Honolulu police car
KAILUA, Oahu — Honolulu police say a bicyclist was seriously injured after being struck by a police car in Kailua.
Police say the 27-year-old woman was hit when she crossed in front of the officer in the patrol car around 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition, and was later upgraded to serious condition.
The officer was not injured.
The crash was under investigation.
Online bidding program limited to procurement of goods and services
An article in Sunday’s newspaper incorrectly defined what sort of county purchases would be bid online through the new Public Purchase program. The program is limited to procurement of goods and services, completed by the Finance Department’s Purchasing Division.
