Retired military meeting in Hilo

Big Island Retired Military Association holds a luncheon meeting Oct. 26 at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo. A three-entree buffet meal and free admission to the garden are offered.

After a short business meeting at noon, there will be a presentation by crew of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Kiska, which is homeported in Hilo.

Nani Mau Gardens is located at 421 Makaliki St., about 3 miles south of Hilo International Airport off Highway 11.

Earthquake drill participation urged

The American Red Cross is encouraging Hawaii residents to register and participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill at 10:17 a.m. Thursday.

The purpose of the drill is for people to learn and practice what to do if they ever experience an earthquake. Millions of people across the country and around the world will be participating.

“Earthquakes are unpredictable. They can occur at any time on any day. The Red Cross encourages people to be ready and know how to stay safe if a quake occurs,” said Coralie Matayoshi, chief executive officer of the Hawaii State Chapter.

People can take part by registering at shakeout.org/hawaii and practicing themselves or with others wherever they happen to be at the time.

Suicide survivors
group meets Thursday

An emotional support group for suicide survivors will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the West Hawaii Community Health Center conference room. The Kona Suicide Prevention Task Force is sponsoring the support group this week and again from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at the same location.

All community members are encouraged to share in their healing after the suicide of a loved one.

Holiday concert
slated Friday

Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation and West Hawaii County Band are offering a free Octoberfest/Halloween concert from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. Those attending are invited to bring a comfortable chair. Bench seating will also be available at the drug-, tobacco-, alcohol- and litter-free event.
