Bottle design reduces carbon emissions
Kona Brewing Co.’s new Longboard Island Lager bottle was recently recognized for innovation, package design and consumer appeal in the Glass Packaging Institute’s Clear Choice Awards.
The proprietary design was introduced in April. It is stronger than the previous bottle and it weighs 11 percent less. The new shape also allows more bottles to fit in shipping containers, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 3,375 tons each year, which is the same as the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by a car traveling 8 million miles.
NHCH offers prenatal care program
for Native Hawaiians
North Hawaii Community Hospital’s Waimea Women’s Center was recently awarded a two-year $206,768 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to implement a culturally relevant prenatal care program for Native Hawaiian women.
CenteringPregnancy offers a group approach to prenatal care. A certified nurse midwife will facilitate 10 two-hour sessions with eight to 10 mothers-to-be and their partner. Sessions start in the first trimester of pregnancy and include individual health prenatal assessments, education and group discussions.

Hilo Bay Cafe and Kohala Burger & Taco have been chosen among the top five Hawaii finalists in the Nature Conservancy Nature’s Plate Contest.
Those wishing to vote for Hawaii’s top green restaurant in this people’s choice awards may visit hawaiireefs.org. until Oct. 15. Nature Conservancy recommends voters consider eateries that use sustainable seafood, free-range and grass-fed meat, organic produce, locally sourced food, and tap water rather than bottled water.
This contest is taking place in several states and cities throughout the U.S.
Conference focuses on technology, sustainability
TechConKona, a conference teaching business owners technology and sustainability solutions to boost their bottom line, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Center. A fundraising pau hana will follow from 4 to 6:30 p.m. to benefit the Guy Toyama Memorial Fund.
The conference will address Hawaii Island’s issues surrounding local food, labor and resources, and will address saving money using web technology and productivity tools. Speakers will include experts in the fields of food sustainability, digital marketing and Internet technology.

Workshop helps businesses obtain government contracts
A Hawaii Procurement Technical Assistance Center Government Contracting Workshop will explain how the government buys goods and services; how to become registered to do business with federal, state and local government; and how to find government contracting opportunities.

Doctors offer free services during Naturopathic
Medicine Week
Naturopathic doctors are opening their doors to provide information and services as part of Naturopathic Medicine Week from today through Sunday.
Dr. Denisa Murayama will give free, 15-minute consultations at Kona Wellness Center all week. Call 331-8404 for an appointment.
Several naturopathic doctors will offer free health screenings and 15-minute consultations from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday north of Kona Banyan Court on Alii Drive under the large banyan tree across from the sea wall.

Real estate agencies announce merger
Clark Realty Corp. and Prudential Orchid Isle Properties are merging. The transition will begin immediately and be completed by mid-November.
Bob and Syleste Williams, who founded Prudential Orchid Isle Properties in 1988, will remain fully involved in the operations of the Hualalai Street office location in Hilo. Bob Williams will remain the broker in charge and will join the Clark Realty management team as a vice president. Syleste Williams will also take a leadership role with Clark Realty’s Core Services Team. Along with the Williamses, the agents and staff of Prudential Orchid Isle will also transition to Clark Realty, bringing the total number of sales agents and staff to just over 150 islandwide.
Clark Realty Corp. has been the Big Island’s market share leader for general brokerage sales for more than two decades. So far in 2013, it has seen a total sales volume of well over $200 million. Prudential Orchid Isle Properties has been a leader in real estate sales volume in the East Hawaii market and has been the top individual office on the Big Island in units sold for the last five years.
Kahoohanohano is interim administrator
The East Hawaii Region of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation has appointed Teana Kahoohanohano as interim administrator of Hale Hoola Hamakua in Honokaa.
Kahoohanohano first joined Hilo Medical Center in July of last year as long-term care and rehabilitation services director. She gained previous leadership experience at facilities managed by Avalon Health Care Inc. in California and Hawaii.
Originally from Maui, Kahoohanohano holds a master’s degree in health policy and administration from Washington State University and a bachelor’s degree in health promotion and disease prevention from the University of Southern California.
