The Kailua Village Artists’ featured artist for October is oil painter Christal Nylin.

Nylin started painting when she was 12 years old and received her first formal training in high school. Designing clothes was Nylin’s first passion. She moved to the Big Island in the late 1970s and began designing custom bathing suits and running bras. When Ironman came to the island, in 1982, she found her calling and created Zoot Triathlon Wear.

“For 32 years, I have been captivated by the beauty, vistas, creativity and ambiance of this place I call home, the Big Island,” she said. “Three years ago, I finally set up an easel and began to convey on canvas those inspirations. Each painting and the process, teaches me something.”

Nylin will be at the KVA gallery Monday and Oct. 28 to talk story. A reception is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 11 for porcelain and watercolor artist Betty Gerstner, watercolor painter Felicia Fry and Nylin.

The gallery is located at 75-5729 Alii Drive, Suite C-110 in the Kona Marketplace. It is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. For more information, call 329-6653.
