An emotional support group for suicide survivors will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the West Hawaii Community Health Center.

Waimea town meeting scheduled Thursday
Waimea Community Association’s town meeting will address loose dogs and rising electric bills at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the Waimea school cafeteria.
A panel, including a representative of the Hawaii Island Humane Society, the police department and prosecutor’s office, will educate the public on the laws pertaining to dogs, enforcement procedures and consequences, and whether changes are needed.
Second will be a discussion led by Parker Ranch President and CEO Dutch Kuyper about developing an integrated resource plan to explore how its energy resources may benefit the communities of Waimea and North Kohala.

Jones Act presentation to be held Saturday
Kelii Akina and Michael Hansen will explain the Jones Act and why they believe it is harmful to Hawaii’s future from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Waimea. A VIP reception will be held at 3 p.m.
Akina makes the point that Hawaii Island is especially hard hit by the Jones Act’s impact on the cost of exporting agricultural and livestock products.

Adult Protective Services featured at Hui Laulima meeting
Adult Protective Services social worker Aaron Nagata will provide an introduction to his agency’s services at West Hawaii Hui Laulima’s meeting from 10:30 a.m. to noon Friday at West Hawaii Community Health Center’s community meeting room.
Adult Protective Services investigates complaints of abuse and neglect involving physically and mentally handicapped people and the elderly. The hui is a consortium of West Hawaii’s major health and human service providers, faith-based groups, community associations, businesses, government and concerned individuals.

Taste of the Hawaiian Range slated Friday
Mealani’s Taste of the Hawaiian Range lets attendees enjoy the island’s bounty and meet local growers and ranchers from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hilton Waikoloa Village.
The menu of the 18th annual event headlines dry-aged, grass-finished beef and includes offerings from 35 Hawaii chefs who will prepare 100 pounds of a specific cut of beef or locally sourced pork, lamb, mutton, goat or wild boar.
Taste also showcases local vegetables, fruits and fungi in the chef’s culinary offerings and offers sustainability and agriculture themed educational displays.

Free wellness fair planned in Keauhou
Big Island PrimeTime Wellness Fair will feature 43 exhibitors with information to help attendees improve their health from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa at Keauhou.
Ten new booths have been added this year, including one for the Hawaii Medication Take Back Program, which will be the collection site for anonymous disposal of unused or expired medication. There will be free flu shots for members of HMSA, HMAA, TRICARE, UHA, AlohaCare and Medicare Part B, as well as health screenings for glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, bone density and balance testing. Door prize drawings, games and live entertainment will be scheduled throughout the fair.

VFW Post 12122 meeting this weekend
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12122 has moved up the date of its next meeting because of the Ironman triathlon on Oct. 12. Members will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday to clean up the area around the post.

Gentle yoga classes planned in W. Hawaii
The Hawaii County Parks and Recreation has ongoing gentle yoga classes open to the public. This gentle yoga class is a series of stretches and breathing techniques that relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
Classes are sheduled from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays in South Kona and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 10 to 11 a.m. Fridays at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona. There is also a chair yoga class from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Mondays at Hale Halawai. Hale Halawai classes will be held at West Hawaii Civic Center from Friday through Oct. 14 because of the Ironman World Triathlon Championship.
Classes are $5 per class, and payment is made at the beginning of each class. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat, beach towel and a bottle of water for class. There are yoga mats available for use.
