Workshop explains benefits of farm bill
to underserved
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will offer a workshop to help underserved farmers and landowners understand the conservation benefits provided through the 2008 Farm Bill.
The workshop will be held Oct. 28 at the USDA Pacific Basin Agriculture Research Center in Hilo with site visits in the afternoon. Participants must register by Oct. 14 at 935-8426 or brcd@hawaii.rr.com.
Underserved groups include, but are not limited to, Asian, Pacific Islander and female landowners and producers.
Four local authors featured at Kona Stories
Kona Stories Book Shop will feature four local authors at its Words and Wine event at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Kona resident Laura Guluzzy, who recently received her master’s degree in gerontology, will present “Grammie’s Closet,” a memoir about caregiving for her grandmother that includes a 21-tip guide for caregivers.
Diane Sherwood Holck of Captain Cook will sign “In Poseidon’s Pocket,” an ocean thrill ride and a memoir of a naive, passionate young bride striving to follow her husband’s life dream aboard a commercial fishing boat.
Amiracle and Benjamin Marantz are co-creators of the AcroSage technique. They will share their passion for this healing modality, which combines partner yoga, massage and meditation.
This event begins with an informal meet-and-greet, continues with a book presentation from each author and concludes with a question-and-answer session. For more information, call Brenda or Joy at 324-0350.
Gala will support culinary scholarships
Marking its 25th year, the Christmas at The Fairmont — Dining with the Chefs gala will raise money for culinary scholarships from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 14 at The Fairmont Orchid Hawaii.
Twenty top Hawaii chefs will create cuisine using primarily local ingredients, handcrafted ales, wines and 100 percent Kona coffee. The event will feature live music under the stars and a live auction of private dinner parties. The gala is presented by the American Culinary Federation Kona Kohala Chefs Association.
Tickets are $85 and will be sold starting Tuesday at Kailua Candy Co., konakohalachefs.org or 329-2522.
Tropical fruit growers meet Wednesday
The West Hawaii chapter of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers will meet from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Hawaii Experiment Station in Kainaliu across from Aloha Theatre.
The meeting is part of the 23rd annual conference and costs $15 for members and $50 for nonmembers. Speakers will discuss fruit from around the world and give a hands-on grafting lesson. Participants are encouraged to bring fruit for sampling and a talk story.
