Kamuela Philharmonic announces third Concerto Competition
The Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra will holds its third annual Concerto Competition the first weekend in February. The competition will be held at a private residence at Makalei Estates in North Kona. Young string instrument players from around the state are eligible for the competition; woodwind, brass, percussion and keyboard players will be eligible in 2015.
During the competition, contestants will perform, by memory, one movement of a piece chosen from standard orchestral repertoire with piano accompaniment.
The preliminary round is slated Feb. 1. Two contestants from each age category: 12 years and younger, 13 to 15, and 16 to 18, will advance to the final round Feb. 2. Age group winners will perform at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, accompanied by the Kamuela Philharmonic Orchestra on March 30 as part of the orchestra’s spring concert. Winning contestants will also be awarded cash.
String players should visit kamuelaphil.org for details on the approved repertoire, and specific procedures for entry. Applications for the event, which must be submitted by Jan. 2 to Kamuela Philharmonic music director Madeline Schatz, are available on the website.

Woodworking exhibition accepting entries Saturday
Wailoa Art and Cultural Center invites Hawaii Island woodworkers to participate in the eighth annual Big Island Woodworkers Invitational in conjunction with the Big Island Ukulele Guild and artists Robert Weiss and Michael and Misato Mortara.
The primary focus of the entries will be fine wood furniture. Sculptures, mirrors and turnings will be accepted as accent pieces. Art is exhibited as it might appear in a home, creating a lively, warm and comfortable environment.
