College 101 seminar offered Oct. 5
Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union will host a free educational seminar, “College 101,” from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at the John Y. Iwane Credit Union Center training room at its Kaloko location.
Emily Tarring, a financial aid counselor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, will discuss topics including the eligibility and application requirements for FAFSA, the financial aid application process and financial aid issues for 2013.

Co-Dependents Anonymous to meet
The Co-Dependents Anonymous women’s meeting is scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at Unity Church sanctuary, 75-5722 Hanama Place in Kailua-Kona.
Co-Dependents Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship of men and women whose common purpose is recovery from codependence and the development and maintenance of healthy relationships. The nonprofit is supported by voluntary contributions of attending members.

Hawaii history talks
North Kohala Public Library in Kapaau will present hourlong talk story sessions on Hawaii’s history with North Kohala historian Boyd D. Bond.
The first session at 6:30 p.m. Monday will focus on Hawaii’s musical history, ranging from Hawaiian chant through the renaissance of Hawaiian music in the late 20th century. In the second presentation at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 28, Bond will discuss the Hawaii state motto. For the final program at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 25, Bond will describe the Makahiki season, which is the Hawaiian time of celebration.

Pahala library
expands hours, offers computer classes
Pahala Public and School Library will expand its public service hours beginning Monday, the first substantial increase in nearly four years because of previous budget cuts.
It will be open from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from noon to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and from noon to 5 p.m. Friday.
The library is located at 96-3150 Pikake St. on the campus of Ka‘u High and Pahala Elementary schools.
In addition, a federal grant now allows the library to provide computer training classes. For information, call 928-2015.
Kelso to discuss PISCES program
Rob Kelso will give an overview of the Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems and its upcoming projects from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority Gateway Energy Center located at 73-4460 Queen Kaahumanu Highway. He will discuss advanced laser communications, robotics, a student lunar experiment, space agriculture, basalt construction and 3-D printing. The presentation includes time before and after the presentation for questions, answers and networking opportunities.
Kelso has been the executive director of PISCES in Hilo since November 2012. Before that, he had a 37-year career with NASA at the Johnson Space Center. For 21 years, he was in flight operations at the Mission Control Center starting with the first Space Shuttle mission STS-1, and was a flight director for 25 shuttle missions in the 1980s and ’90s.
The program is part of a monthly pau hana series for people interested in technology in West Hawaii. Each month, a presenter discusses a different topic related to technology and entrepreneurship. All are welcome.

Kona resident writes caregiving memoir
Kona resident Laura Guluzzy has authored “Inside Grammie’s Closet,” a caregiving memoir by a granddaughter turned gerontologist.
She will speak and sign books at 6 p.m. Tuesday at a Words and Wine event at Kona Stories in Keauhou Shopping Center. “Inside Grammie’s Closet” is laced with humor, old-time stories and memories and includes a 21-tip guide for caregivers.
Guluzzy consults and lectures on aging. She is also in production with Denisa Maruyama and Lisa Moore on an aging wellness series for Na Leo O Hawaii Community Television that will cover a full spectrum of aging issues.
